The impact of the railway to Sevenoaks, 1862

The impact of the railway to Sevenoaks, 1862,

by Prof. David Killingray

A railway line to Sevenoaks had been an ambition for many local landowners and farmers from the mid-1840s.  They believed that it would bring great benefit to the town for all social classes.  In June 1862 a railway up the Darent valley to Bat & Ball was formerly opened, connecting Sevenoaks with London.  This illustrated talk looks at the impact that the new railway had on Sevenoaks.  Did it have wide benefits for all inhabitants, did land prices rise along with new housing, did the population of the town increase, and were foodstuffs and consumer goods cheaper?  Not all turned out as was hoped.
